The Sustainability of Agricultural Soils

Soils are the key to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) proposed by United Nations and mitigate the climate change adverse effects. Agriculture is the activity that needs a greater occupation of soil, consuming land resources, and therefore, it is basic to be able to achieve sustainability. In addition, it is essential for food production and to ensure food safety as FAO constantly reminds us.

In order to achieve the SDGs and to reduce the effects of climate change and ensure food production, sustainability in agriculture must consider numerous aspects, beyond technical aspects and soil management.

Without any doubt, there is a clear need to increase organic carbon stock in soils, with proper management, but other strategies must also be applied that involve the diversification of production, the implementation of the circular economy and education. Moreover, Citizens must be involved and participate in order to achieve the objectives of environmental sustainability.

A combined effect of all these actions is what will allow us to reduce soil degradation and stop the continuous loss. As indicated by the FAO, every five seconds an area equivalent to a football field is degraded and at this rate, in the year 2050 90% of the soil will be degraded. Only with sustainable strategies can we avoid it.

These are some of the ideas that we want to discuss in this webinar and hope that participants can give us opinions and good feedback.

Full professor at University Miguel Hernández of Elche, Spain, previously at the University of Alicante, Autonomous University of Madrid and Polytechnic University of Valencia. Graduate in Sciences (Chemist), graduate in Geography and History (Geography), master in Water Management, Treatment, master in Fertilizers and Environment and master in Environmental Management, and PhD in Environmental Sciences. Research is focused in soil-water and waste-environment relations, mainly in soil-water and soil-waste interactions under different management and waste reuse. Researcher ID:A-7830-2010 and ORCID code: 0000-0002-4765-2191. The dissemination of research activity is reflected in 235 communications presented in national and international conferences and congresses, 29 invited lectures from universities, associations and government agencies. Director of the PhD Program Environment and Sustainability (2012-present). Member of the Spanish Society of Soil Science, International Union of Soil Sciences, European Society for Soil Conservation, DessertNet and the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry.

Department of Agricultural Engineering, Technical University of Cartagena, Spain

Introduction

Full Professor at the Department of Agricultural Engineering of the Technical University of Cartagena. Previously he worked at the University Miguel Hernández (Spain), University of Florence (Italy) and University of Cordoba (Spain). He has a Bachelor Degree in Environmental Sciences (2002), and PhD in Soil Science (2007). His research expertise lines are soil quality, soil biology, sustainable management of soil and crop diversification. He is author of 101 articles, 90 of them included in the Science Citation Report (JCR), many of them within the first quartile. They accumulate ~ 3000 citations to date, with an H-index of 34 (SCOPUS). He is also author of 15 book chapters, and editor of one book published by Elsevier. He has also worked abroad for short stays at the University of California-Davis (2004, 2005), Hohenheim University (2006), University of Northern British Columbia (2011) and Lund University (2014). He has participated in 22 research projects, being 12 financed by the European Union, and in 30 contracts with public and private entities. He has co-organized 15 sessions in international conferences such as EGU General Assembly, Eurosoil or AAAS Annual Meeting. He is member of the Editorial Board of the Journals SOIL, Geoderma, Spanish Journal of Agricultural Research and Spanish Journal of Soil Science. In November 2012 he was awarded with the Outstanding Young Scientist of Soil Science Division Award by the European Geosciences Union and in January 2020 as the best researcher at UPCT. He is been Secretary General of the Spanish Society of Soil Science (2017-2021) and Committee member and chair of the EGU Subdivision 5: Soil Chemistry (2016-2020).

Maria Doula is Chemist, holding M.Sc and PhD degree on Chemical Technology in the field of environmental science and particularly related to soil management and pollution. She is Director of Research, Head of the Laboratory of Non-Parasitic Diseases, Soil Resources and Geoinformatics of the Department of Phytopathology in the Benaki Phytopathological Institute and collaborating academic staff of the Open University of Cyprus, Faculty of Pure and Applied Science-Environmental Conservation and Management. Dr. Doula has published 48 peer-reviewed papers in academic Journals, more than 150 announcements in international and national conferences and 7 book chapters on environmental quality, soil science, water quality, waste management and reuse in agricultural sector, composting, sustainable agriculture, Mediterranean agricultural systems, desertification in Mediterranean and adaptation measures, Greenhouse Gases emission form agriculture. She has participated in many EU and national projects as coordinator or coordinator/member of the project team. Her research work has gained international acceptance (more than 1250 citations of the published work and an h-index of 17-Scopus ID:6602872510). Two of the EU projects she coordinated were awarded from the EC; (i) the LIFE PROSODOL was between the best EU projects for 2014; and (ii) the INTERREG BalkanROAD awarded as public choice project in REGIOSTARS 2021 in the category SMART EUROPE. She is a member of the EIP-AGRI Focus Group 45 “Digital tools for sustainable nutrients management”.

Full Professor in FES-C UNAM. Graduated in Chemistry by UNAM, M. Sc. and Ph D. studies in Biological Sciences (edaphology) by UNAM; Master in Science Education and Ph. D. in Natural Sciences for Sustainable Development by Costa Rica Technological Institute and UNAM. Research interests in chemical study of soil clays as catalysts in green chemistry as a way to carry out clean chemical processes. Education, teaching, and educational research on Soil Science and training of teachers and researchers in soil sciences and green chemistry: especially education for children and young people, educational research, projects and networks of educational innovation in Soil Science with national and international links. National and international invited lectures from universities and soil science societies (354). Author of books and didactic material on Soil Science for children, as well as chapters in books on Green Chemistry and Soil Science books (13); Editor of soil science books (3); author of the Latin-American educative project “Thus are the soils of my Nation®” and “The IUSS GOES TO THE SCHOOL®” educative project. President of the Pillar 2 of the FAO Global Soil Partnership. IUSS President. Member of the Mexican, Argentinean, and Latin-American Soil Science Societies, as well as president of the International Union of Soil Sciences.
